Are women settling for lower paying jobs?

Auster, Ellen R. "Task Characteristics As A Bridge Between Macro- And Microlevel Research On Salary Inequality Between Men And Women." Academy Of Management Review 14.2 (1989): 173-193. Business Source Premier. Web. 10 Mar. 2015.

The article deals with the reason for women's lower pay on a macro and micro level. Useful charts are included that show the reasons for the difference in pay from these different perspectives. The article explains that jobs that are dominated by females tend to be lower paying jobs. Jobs like librarians, teachers, and social workers are female dominated and these are lower paying jobs. The more prestigious jobs are male dominated. The article also touches on a possibility of female stereotypes. Women are stereotyped in the workplace concerning their abilities and attitudes, and these seem to be more reasons for the difference in pay between men and women.

This article gave me a different perspective on the issue. The female dominated jobs are in fact lower paying. That would make it okay that women make less on the issue as a whole. It also makes me wonder are these jobs lower paying because they are female dominated. If there was a person trying to give women less, and they are in power they could make these jobs lower paying. That thought seems to make it seem like an underground conspiracy or something. I am starting to think it is okay that women make less. The stereotype issue seems like a long shot simply because there are so many laws in place to guard against that. The female dominated job seem like a more logical reason.

This article basically brings my other sources together. The first source explained that women are content with making less than men. The second explains that women settle for lower paying jobs. This source says that the jobs women normally take are lower paying jobs. Women settle for these jobs because it is what most women like to do in the work force, and they are content with making less because that is what the job they love pays.

Further research has to include enough information about men and women who work the same job. My articles seem to talk about the issue on a larger level. What are reasons that women make less than men on the same job? How often does it occur that women make less than men on the same job?
